About The Book

indeepfinalTitle: In Deep

Author: Kella McKinnon

Genre: Contemporary Romance

“I never thought it would go this far… that a man with such terrible secrets would steal my heart and make me want him so much, when his life of danger and lies should have made me want nothing more than to turn and run. I understood him, you see. I knew that beneath all of that money and power, and yes… violence, was a man in desperate need of love. So desperate that he took from me something I wasn’t ready to give: my future.”

Brielle Dalton thought the few months in Vegas she needed to finish her dissertation would also be a chance to have some fun before ‘real life’ took over. But she never counted on meeting Cristos Vicario, the irresistible but troubled owner of the Adagio casino. The attraction was instant and all-consuming, but in the beginning neither knew that their lives had crossed before, and the result had been nothing short of tragedy. By the time Brielle discovers who Cristos really is, and what he has done in a reckless attempt to keep her, it’s too late. She’s already in too deep.

Author Bio

Hello everyone! Let me introduce myself. Though I used to work in Boston in the biotech industry, I’m now loving life on a small farm in New England where my husband and I are raising our three children. Between taking care of chickens and goats and shuttling the kids to dance class and piano lessons, I find the time to pursue my own interest: writing. I relish creating stories and bringing my characters to life on the written page, and each book is a labor of love.

I’m passionate about the romance genre because of the emotional journey a well-written novel can take the reader on, and my goal with each of my books is to do the same for my readers. I would love to hear from you at kellamckinnon.com, or kellamckinnon@yahoo.com.

Book Excerpt from Drowning in Fear

Book Excerpt

Nolan gazed down into the pool of thick, black water below. The lake stretched on in front of him, a sleeping monster ready to swallow him whole the moment he dipped his foot in it.

He turned back toward the house he’d come from, a nondescript two-story wooden building, barely more than a cabin. Light burned in the upstairs bedroom, and it didn’t feel right—its glow too golden, too luminescent, as if it didn’t come from this world at all.

A black shadow appeared behind the glass.

Nolan panicked and put a step back. His foot slipped on the wet surface, and before he had time to cry out, he fell down into the lake below. Water rolled over him in black, thick waves, pulling him under.

He screamed, but no sound came out. Water burned his eyes and engulfed him, threatening to drown him. He fought against the darkness, struggled to stay afloat, but the water was sticky and thick, almost as thick as blood, and he couldn’t move at all….

***

He woke up screaming.

Sweat rained down from his forehead and he shivered all over as he took a deep breath, trying to calm down. He was safe at home, in his own bedroom, not near the lake or the house he’d never seen before—not stuck in the nightmare.

The door burst open and his mom walked in. Her blonde hair looked completely disheveled and her bathrobe dragged over the floor, as if she’d rushed to put it on before darting to his room.

The first few nights it happened, she’d run in, eyes wide, worry turning her face into a wrinkled mask. Now, although her lips curled in annoyance, she still rushed over to his room every time.

He loved her for that.

“Did you have the nightmare again?”

“Yeah.” He wrapped his arms around himself. Now that he’d stopped sweating, he realized how cold his room was, as if he’d somehow been transported to the Arctic.

Mom sat down on the edge of the bed, kissed him on the forehead, and pulled him close. “It’s okay, sweetie. It was just a dream.”

The first time he’d had the nightmare, he’d believed her. It seemed logical. Dad had just broken the news to him that he’d enrolled him for a summer camp near a lake, in this stupid town called Weirdville. Mom had been so mad she hadn’t spoken to Dad all day. Nolan was mad too, but he wasn’t good at ignoring people, and way better at throwing temper tantrums. He’d crashed through the house like a tornado, jumped up and down the stairs, screamed at the top of his lungs.

The worst part was that he understood why Dad had done it. He’d gone behind Nolan’s back—and his Mom’s—in signing him up for the summer camp.

In high school, Dad had won the national swimming competition: 100 meters. He went swimming practically every day.

Nolan, on the other hand, was terrified of water. He’d been afraid of it for as long as he could remember. He wasn’t terribly good at any sport, but he dreaded swimming the most. Every time he had to go to the swimming pool, he ended up having a panic attack, until his school’s gym teacher decided it wasn’t worth the hassle and let Nolan pass on the swimming.

After he found out about the camp enrollment, the nightmares had begun, but there was

something strange about them. In daytime, Nolan feared what he assumed would be a slew of questioning stares of his fellow campers almost as much as the water itself. People always looked at him as if he’d grown three heads whenever he mentioned being afraid of the water.

In the nightmare, that barely played any part. It was all about the lake, about the house nearby, about the thing hiding inside the house.

“I don’t want to go.” He clutched Mom’s arm, digging his fingers into her skin. “Please don’t make me.”

She sighed. “I’m sorry, sweetie, but your Dad is convinced this’ll be good for you and… to be honest, I think he may be right.” She stroked his hair. “There’s no reason to be so afraid of swimming. It’s just water.”

He clenched his fists. If he got a penny every time he heard that sentence, he’d be a millionaire. Of course he had no reason to be afraid of water, but he was. He barely kept it under control while taking a bath. No way would he survive going to a lake.

Whenever he got near water, a blind panic took hold of him. He couldn’t move, could barely breathe. Run, his body screamed. Run! Get away from the water!

Even if he ignored his body’s demands, he always ended up panicking anyway. Then people had to come drag him out of the pool, and it all got so embarrassing everyone at school made fun at him.

It hurt that Mom thought the same way about it as Dad, that he should just get over this fear of water and move on with his life—that he couldn’t be normal until he did.

Mom pulled the blankets up to his shoulders and helped him lie back down. “Try to get some sleep. The bus will be here in less than four hours.” She kissed his cheek, and then disappeared out of his room.

Four hours until he had to leave. Four hours.

He clutched the blanket so hard his knuckles turned white.

Book Excerpt from To The Stars

Book Excerpt

“Come!” his father orders. Noah complies even though his body kicks against the action. He follows a few steps behind his father as they walk through the hallway and turn at the corner. Another hallway stretches out. It seems identical to the first hallway except for the steel door that creates a gap in the white almost immediately to the right. Far ahead, at the end of the hallway is another steel door, just after the hallway turns off to the left. They walk toward the door at the far end, passing the left turn-off that reveals another section of the Lower Level, and stop in front of the door. The High Chancellor turns to face Noah who is forced to take a step or two back to avoid looking up his father’s nose.

“Father?” Noah asks as he looks around, “Where…”

“Today I am not your father,” the High Chancellor cuts him off without hesitation, “I am purely your High Chancellor and you are an apprentice. Clear?”

Noah’s forehead pulls into a deep scowl. Why did he think that somehow their relationship has progressed?

You were never my father anyway.

“Are we clear, Mr. Edison?” the Leader reiterates with spitting clarity. “Clear as can be…my Lord.”

“Now then, instead of showing you the day to day of being the head of the Empire,” the High Chancellor says to his apprentice, “I will educate you in the actions that make a leader a leader.”

Noah stays quiet and only nods when the High Chancellor’s pause requires one. The High Chancellor turns around once again and pulls the red pinstriped sleeve of his sleek, black suit upward to expose his wrist and brings it to a glowing panel to the side of the door. The door itself has no handle and promotes the epitome of total security. The panel reacts with a voice that fills the white hallway with its cold tone.

“Code 10 restricted access zone. Blood identification requested.”

The High Chancellor moves his hand to the wall. From what previously looked like a part of the wall, a red line of light forms a square. The square comes out of the wall a few centimetres before it stops. In it, five dots of light appear in the shape of a hand, the High Chancellor places his hand on the square, his fingertips correlating with the red dots. Then he hears a quick, sharp sound, and five crimson tears run from the fingertips. They run down until they each reach another red dot underneath the previous dots. The red light flashes several times then switches to green. The High Chancellor takes his hand away from the panel and it disappears back into the wall, the blood disappearing with it as if it never ran. The cold voice speaks again.

“Blood sample accepted. Welcome High Chancellor.”

From the door comes a latching sound that echoes past Noah and disappears around the corner they came from. It swings open with a heavy groan into another pit of darkness. The High Chancellor steps inside without a second wasted and Noah, after weighing his options, follows. The darkness surrounds him like a thick piece of cloth.

Promo Post Defender of the Flame

defenderoftheflamebanner

Defender of the Flame

DOTF 196x300Title: Defender of the Flame

Author: Sylvia Engdahl

Genre: Science Fiction

Defender of the Flame is about the first steps toward the next phase of human evolution — the development of so-called “paranormal” powers such as ESP. Starship pilot Terry Radnor’s life is transformed by the discovery that he possesses these powers, and that others are working to spread them throughout the worlds of humankind. But they face danger. Most people don’t want to know that such powers exist; they have a deep innate fear having to admit that their conception of reality is false. And some of those people will go to any lengths to suppress their emergence. Some will even resort to terrorism.

Terry vows to defend the world that is spearheading the spread of new human capabilties, a world where for the first time in his life he has found happiness. He has no idea of how far that aim will take him from everything else he cares about — his promising career as a Fleet officer, his wife and soulmate, his unborn child. Torn away against his will, he is forced into exile from all that has previously mattered to him, seeing no chance to fulfill the commitment he has made. Yet a mysterious and extraordinary destiny has been predicted for Terry, and fate leads him to an even stranger one than anybody could have imagined.

This is the first book in the Rising Flame series, to be followed soon by Herald of the Flame. It does not depend on having read the Hidden Flame series, which precedes it, since although set in the same world it is a separate story, complete in itself, that takes place 200 years later.

Book Excerpt from Loving is Good

Book Excerpt

“You’re deep in thought. Anything I can help you with?” Gabe asked with his gravelly and a pinch of hot- smoldering-sexy voice.

A gasp slipped through my lips, and my body temperature jumped ten degrees.

“Didn’t mean to scare you. Your mom”—Gabe pointed to the Mi Vida food truck—“told me to come get you. She said and I quote, ‘Tell my girl to get her curvy ass over here now,’ with an emphasis on now. I guessed that’s you since I don’t see any other girls sitting here with a curvy ass quite like yours.”

His eyes traveled my terrain, a full body inventory in seconds, lingering on my backside a little too long for comfort. My temperature was close to boiling.

“Wipe that smirk off your face or I will. I grew up on the mean streets of LA,” I said sharply.

His laugh rocked me from the inside out. I crossed my arms around my chest, partly to hide my Wonder Bra but mostly to hide my flighty hand movements and fidgeting. I tightened my hold around my body and stuck out my chin. It wasn’t a flattering pose, but I was going for tough.

“You make me laugh.” His nose crinkled. It made him look all the more sexy.

“You doubt me?” I said and tightened the grip around my chest.

He retorted with an irresistibly devastating grin. “I know for a fact that you grew up in the suburbs of Santa Barbara. The only thing you know about the mean streets is what you learned watching Law and Order reruns.”

“You don’t know anything about me.” I held firm in my pose but added narrowed eyes and pressed lips. My menacing look didn’t leave him shaking in fear.

“Your cousin”—he nodded toward Diego—“and I went out for beers last week. Give him a couple of beers and he reads like an open book.” His eyes resumed their roaming.

Author Bio

7862046Jonathan Bruce began writing what amounted to terrible Star Trek: The Next Generation fan fiction when he was four. Although the original manuscripts are lost (or perhaps destroyed), we can rest assured that his prose has improved significantly since then. After high school, he began writing and directing plays which gradually improved depending on whom you ask. He discovered his love of a good fight scene after writing a Dracula knock-off which took a 19th century classic and made it less about Victorian yearning and 300% more about stabbing things in the jugular.

And yes, this means he wrote vampire fiction before Stephanie Meyer made it cool to sparkle in the sun.

He has a Master’s Degree in History, thanks largely to his thesis focusing on MUSIC, a Milwaukee-based school desegregation campaign during the 1960’s. He also enjoys discussing/making fun of pop culture of the 20th century and reading books of a non-historical nature. In his off moments, you can catch him writing for fun or making inane movies about nothing in particular. He also occasionally provides work for Twenty Four Pages a Second, a pretty keen website you should totally check out.

Book Excerpt

A strange expression came over Niall’s face, and he seemed to look deep into her, not into her eyes, but through her eyes. As if he could see the thoughts clamoring to betray her. She glanced down then up again, finding it hard to look away.

“And you’re certain your app will do this,” he said, his face serious. “Help people find true love?”

Her hand stilled on Chairman Meow’s white belly, earning her a prickly swat. She gave an emphatic nod. “Of course. Don’t you agree?”

Niall frowned a bit. “No. I see it as a fun conversation starter, more or less.”

She scowled. “So you’re saying our product is some kind of joke? That users won’t take it seriously? What’s on your list? The one you made at camp. You believed in it then.”

The question seemed to catch Niall unprepared. He sat still and awkward for a moment, his eyes scanning the room as if searching for a way out. Finally, he shook his head.

“I was a kid.”

“But you’ll make one now, of course.” She added it to her to-do list so that she wouldn’t forget to look for it.

“No.” Niall waved Chairman Meow’s tail as the cat batted at it. “I compromised about the windows and the cat. But I’m not making a list.”

Disappointment filled her. How closed off could he be? Sheesh. She was right to be firm with herself about not falling for him. They were great as friends, but couldn’t be less compatible romantically—with or without a list, it was obvious.

After a long moment, Niall drew a deep, slow breath. “We’re better off using traits from your list or ones we get from market samples.”

Her eyes narrowed. “And why is that?”

He tilted his face, one corner of his mouth lifting in a wry half smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “I don’t exactly fall into your target audience.” His stiff shoulders shrugged. “I’m not looking to meet someone.”

“Oh.” A heavy weight settled in her chest. Although her heart still broke when she thought of Brett, she knew that someday she’d be ready for romance. Something in Niall’s tone, however, sounded bleak and definite, as if he didn’t think he’d ever love anyone. Or worse, that anyone would ever love him.

In a breathless second, she almost asked him why he’d never consider love. She felt the question rising in her chest, drew in air then, hesitated. What could she say that wouldn’t sound too personal? Take things to an intimate level that might endanger their fragile partnership?
