Book Excerpt

Slowly he rubbed down from her shoulder to her arm. “You’re real good at this,” he said softly, “bein’ able to catch such a big one in this lil’ ol’ pond. Gotta confess, fishin’ ain’t one of my strong suits,” he chuckled lightly and his hand found her thigh. That large, powerful grasp of his gently stroking.

She nearly lost her grip on the fishing pole as her eyes fluttered back in her head, the sensation utterly divine. She choked back her moan, struggling to regain awareness of her surroundings, tightening her grip on the pole. His dark hand on her pale skin excited her further, and she studied it thoughtfully before she yanked the line out of the water, a large fish attached to it which she skilfully released in the bucket.

Seeing yet another big one on the end of her line he gave a surprised whistle. “Damn. I wanted to flatter you, but you are good.” His hands never left her though, he, too, admiring the dark cocoa of his work-hardened hands upon her smooth, pale flesh.

His large fingers pried a little at the valley between her thighs. “It’d be somethin’,” he muttered softly, as if to himself, “havin’ a woman like you around.” And he leaned in so close that his lips were nearly touching her ear, his breath a pleasant, warm wash on her skin.

Was it possible for her heart to stop and quicken all at once? The myriad of pleasant sensations: his breath, his scent, his flesh. Her breathing caught in her throat as her lips parted, exposing those straight teeth. She trembled, and her thighs tightened before releasing around him, her eyes rolling up slightly.

That little gesture made way for his hungry hand, and he delved between, stroking over the soft flesh of her inner thigh. Though noto leave it at that, his lips moved on down and he kissed beneath her earlobe so that his nose brushed against her. He kissed again softly, his lips big and soft against her pale skin, and he muttered in a low, pleasant husk, “You’re beautiful.”

She gasped, her eyes closing as she shimmied closer to him, letting the fishing pole slump into the dirt. Her knees fell away further, and her entire skin seemed to burn with desire. She wanted him. Oh yes, she did.

Her palm lay atop his, stroking him gingerly before she whimpered, “I can’t get pregnant.” She paused, her eyes finding his. “You can’t finish in me.”

Those words confirmed that she’d accept him, but at the same time, he couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed. He was a strong bull of a man, and he wanted her, wanted to claim her. Fully and completely.

Book Excerpt from Just a Curtain

justacurtain

I’m happy to host an excerpt from literary fiction novel “Just a Curtain”. Enjoy the excerpt!

Book Excerpt

“No comment…” I heard her repeat without a pause, and probably ready to repeat it again if necessary. She did. “Again, no comment! You people really need to find another angle to your stories. Richard and Elena Drummond were our friends. End of story!” and she slammed the gate to the ranch behind her, got back into the SUV and probably sat silent until she, her kids and husband reached the safety of the house. Now it’s just my house; the only one on the Drummond Ranch.

Set in the rising lands of the Wind River Mountains along the Clark Fork of the Yellowstone in northwest Wyoming, it should be the warm and welcoming home of my folks and me. But on this occasion it is not. I heard the brakes on their car and used the distraction for the newsies to run over to the barn without being noticed. That’s how I heard Mrs. Segersson’s outbursts to them. Mom and dad aren’t here and they, the ‘news’ mongers, know it. Everybody knows it; I guess. The official story is that they met an untimely end while on assignment with an NGO in sub-saharan Africa—setting up an anti-poaching campaign hoping to remedy the illegal ivory and rhino horn trade that was threatening not only the animals but the ecological balance of those areas, not to mention wreaking havoc on the local economies and such. All I know is that they missed my sixteenth birthday—the only birthday they ever missed, and now won’t be the last.

My eyes are sore from crying, my stomach hurts ’cause even though there’s a bunch of food in the house—thanks to the neighbors and all—I just haven’t had an appetite for the last few days. Few days. Only a few days? Seems like forever already.

The late spring rains that brought back the verdant valley from the barren cold is also casting a pall over the land that is seeping into the hearts and minds of the folks around here trying to weed out the tragedy from the hope that has to carry forward in spite of the loss of dear friends. I know they mean well, and my folks were as close to many of them as their own family. But it was my family, and now I have none. Grandparents and great-grandparents, I have, but they never visit; I don’t expect that to change… long story.

I’m not advertising that I’m in the barn and really? I’d just as soon stay out of sight as hear people’s consolations any more than I have to… But I’m still curious I guess, because I hear Reggie saying, “Mommy why do those people want to know about Dashiel now? I mean, they didn’t seem too interested in him his whole life before now?” Jeremy, her little brother, adds, “I mean, they don’t even know him; do they?”

I peek out the barn door in time to see Mrs. Segersson, Marilyn, look to her husband Dave with almost a plea of help on her lips, but she answers, “The same reason that buzzards only show up after the jackrabbit’s been hit by the truck; I suppose. The newsies perform a similar function. They gorge on the meat of a tragedy and clear the path for future troubles.”

Just a Curtain

Curtain coverTitle: Just a curtain

Author: J.L. Lawson

Genre: Literary Fiction, Adventure, Coming of Age

“If you had virtually unlimited resources and a pristinely practicable imagination, and a knack for turning air into butter, what do you suppose you’d do next?”
—Tera Elphinstone, Drummond Group Director

Just A Curtain is the remarkable, fast-paced gateway to both The Elf series and the grander epic recorded in J. L. Lawson’s other works: The Donkey and The Wall trilogy and The Curious Voyages of the Anna Virginia Saga.

Just A Curtain chronicles the remarkable life and achievements of Dashiel Drummond and the capable group of people he gathers around him to make a change for the better in the world in which he finds himself. A coming of age story, orphaned at sixteen, he rises through the angst of adolescence to the challenge of fulfilling the promise of his potential—from ranch hand and welder to the pre-eminent global entrepreneur and builder of starships.

DSC04684I am a father, a grandfather and a “Came-to-Writing-Professionally-Late-in-Life” kinda guy. After rewarding careers as a Land Planner, Standards Engineer, Technical Writer/Graphic Designer, and as an Educator (High School and College Literature/Composition) I settled down at the laptop and began storytelling for a living. My wife and I live in the Cross-timbers country of North Texas and spend as much time seeing this amazing country, its National Parks and Forests, as we can manage.
My own journey has taken me both far afield and deep within. It is a journey, no doubt, similar in nature to many seekers’ travels who have come before me. However, an unconditional commitment to the work is the trait of only a handful of those who set their aim very high indeed, and then to find a guide who knows the way through this rarely known land, is without question what all others have equally sought. Some gave up the search, some became distracted by the lure of other interests, many became satisfied with the knowledge they had already gleaned from their initial searches. There is, in the end, only so much gold.

Book Review Jack Canon’s American Destiny

6065346[1]Title: Jack Canon’s American Destiny

Author: Greg Sandora

Genre: Political Thriller

It’s the steamy summer of 2016 in Washington, D.C. just days before the Democratic National Convention. A long and painful recession has left ordinary Americans suffering, spawning the hottest Presidential Contest in history. Jack Canon, a man born into privilege, a witness to great social injustice is going to be President of the United States–no matter what! Desperate and corrupt, the leader of the free world orders a hit to slow him down. The plan backfires–the wrong people are dead–a manhunt points to the unthinkable–The President of the United States.

Rewind one year, Jack’s focus on redistribution of wealth and energy has made him powerful enemies. Once his friends, Rogue Billionaires, Oil Sheiks, the Mob, all want him gone. The current President wants him alive–thinking he can win against an unabridged liberal. A Universal Raw Nerve of wealth vs. poverty is exposed becoming a thrill ride as deep machinations of espionage, geo-politics and deception, even murder play out. Kind and charismatic, Jack’s just naughty enough to have you falling for him like one of his loving circle of loyal friends. Of course he’s flawed, a dedicated family man, faithful to one woman, but in love with two. Is it his fault his best friend is impossibly jaw dropping beautiful? Think the crime and passion of the Godfather meets the romance and innocence of Camelot. A story that could spark a movement, a book that can seed a revolution. A heart thumping climax so shocking you’ll pull the covers and draw the shades! One things for sure, through all the drama and suspense, you’ll be pulling for Jack!

It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed a book, but when I got the opportunity to review this one, I had to. Political thrillers are like my dirty little secrets. Jack Canon’s American Destiny is a great novel plot-wise, I’d only wished I would’ve enjoyed Jack’s personality more.

Let’s start with the good. There’s a great plot, plenty of action and suspense, the settings are great, and in general, the book is very enjoyable. I had to get used to the writing style, but after the first few chapters, I was completely hooked.

But Jack…Well, Jack’s personality makes him the kind of person I’d never associate with. He’s arrogant. I’m not sure if I’m the only person who thought so, but his behavior is out of line most of hte time. He’s an idealist, or so he claims, but more than anything he acts like a ruler who knows best what his subjects would think. Wanting to change the world isn’t enforcing choices upon others, and it seems like Jack is headed more in that direction.

I want to see Jack grow as a person in the next few books, and I really hope that happens. Changing the world can mean changing yourself first, and with Jack, that’s definitely the case.

Apart from my issues with Jack’s personality, I really enjoyed this read.

Book Excerpt from Waking up Dead

wakingupdeadbanner

I’m happy to share a snippet with you today from “Waking up Dead”, a paranormal mystery novel by author Margo Bond Collins. Enjoy the snippet!

Book Excerpt

When I died, I expected to go to heaven.

Okay. Maybe hell. It’s not like I was perfect or anything. But I was sort of hoping for heaven.

Instead, I went to Alabama.

Yeah. I know. It’s weird.

I died in Dallas, my hometown. I was killed, actually. Murdered. I’ll spare you the gruesome details. I don’t like to remember them myself. Some jerk with a knife–and probably a Bad-Mommy complex. Believe me, if I knew where he was, I’d go haunt his ass.

At any rate, by the time death came, I was ready for it–ready to stop hurting, ready to let go. I didn’t even fight it.

And then I woke up dead in Alabama. Talk about pissed off.

You know, even reincarnation would have been fine with me–I could have started over, clean slate and all that. Human, cow, bug. Whatever. But no. I ended up haunting someplace I’d never even been.

That’s not the way it’s supposed to work, right? Ghosts are supposed to be the tortured spirits of those who cannot let go of their earthly existence. If they could be convinced to follow the light, they’d leave behind said earthly existence and quit scaring the bejesus out of the poor folks who run across them. That’s what all those “ghost hunter” shows on television tell us.

Let me tell you something. The living don’t know jack about the dead.

Not this dead chick, anyway.

Book Excerpt from Counterpoint

counterpointbanner

I’m hosting a snippet today from fantasy novel “Counterpoint”. Enjoy!

Book Excerpt

“Things are changing Mr Bassett. A storm is approaching this world and not one living thing can escape it. Events are about to unfold which will place you and your family at the centre. Just remember, nothing is as it seems. Trust no one. When the time comes, stand firm,” he said, before vanishing in front of his eyes. No smoke, no noise, nothing. He simply vanished. David took a moment to breathe, and wipe the sweat from his forehead. He suddenly realised a distinct coldness had overtaken the room as a result of the presence of this creature. His breath made small clouds of vapour in the frigid space. He turned round and looked into the mirror, which was now iced. He was light-headed and sick to the stomach. After splashing his face with warm water, he composed himself and went back to the bar to try and enjoy the rest of the night. That may have been asking too much.

Counterpoint

Counterpoint CoverTitle: Counterpoint

Author: Daniel Rafferty

Genre: Scifi/Fantasy

Move over “War of the Worlds,” we’ve got bigger issues to deal with now!  In author Daniel Rafferty’s “Counterpoint,” things aren’t always as they seem—but what, exactly, does that mean?   Is it time for the fight to the end between good and evil, Heaven and Hell? Is it the beginning of Armageddon and the end of time?

It all starts out innocently enough when 12-year-old Mary asks her father where he’s off to, which happens to be one of mankind’s worst endeavours, a World War.  But the story quickly moves beyond earthly boundaries, with angels, demons, the devil, archangels and even humans with supernatural powers, coming together to fight a battle between right and wrong, good and evil.  And the powers-that-be are acting on God’s behalf, but is he just watching from a distance to see what happens? What’s God’s role in all of this—and will he be back to save the day—does he even still exist?

You may think you know the storyline, with so many familiar biblical names being thrown about like fresh holy water; however, there are strange twists and turns that’ll leave you wondering who the good guys and bad guys really are. Is Lucifer actually the devil incarnate or do we humans have it all wrong?  Is Archangel Michael really who we think he is? Can all angels be trusted and are some demons good? It’s a mixed up dimension of space and time when you’re dealing with supernatural entities and human beings—and whose to be trusted?

Beyond the clear symbolism of names such as Mary, Gabriel, David, Ariel and others, what role does the Bassett family play and why does everyone seem to have plans for them?  Why have they been chosen among all other families on earth to do what they do? What have they been selected to do? Will they realize their roles in time to save the planet and the universe as we know it or are they just pawns in a much bigger scheme?

This epic tale takes places from Liverpool to London, to the Scottish and Welsh highlands and over to Dublin—but the end-game results will either be salvation or total destruction of the entire world—and the outcome is still not certain. Is God’s human experiment over—or will we continue for another millennium?  To find out, you must stop what you’re doing right now and read the pages of this exciting story! Say your prayers and hope someone’s listening!

Author Bio

665183_583779674987556_897964118_oDaniel Rafferty currently lives in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is actively engaged in writing the epic Counterpoint Trilogy Series and is also working on different pieces of writing outside this genre. This includes the upcoming sci-fi thriller Destiny: Illusions. Always intrigued with epic dramas and grand questions, which have been asked throughout the history of civilisation, he aims to incorporate dramatic stories around these questions. This provides a large tapestry in which his writing is sewn.

Will these people just get out of my way?! “Excuse me… pardon me… please move… I SAID MOVE IT!” she finally snapped ata close knit Indian family blocking her way to the bathroom.

Once inside she took a deep breath and stared at her reflection in the mirror. I could use a touch up! She fished in her makeup bag for the appropriate articles and daintily applied the foundation, blush and mascara. Sighing deeply she packed up her bag and swiveled around to the exit of the restroom. Oh god… It is crowded at the security check… I am going to be here forever!
