Book Review The Madrona Heroes Register

18670060Title: The Madrona Heroes Register

Author: Hillel Cooperman

Genre: YA Superhero Fantasy

Someone in ten-year-old Binny Jordan’s family has a super power – and it’s not her. Binny’s seven-year-old sister Cassie can turn herself invisible and now a strange man is keenly interested in what Cassie can do. Binny’s parents seem more distracted than ever, and her older brother Zach is hiding something of his own. Binny needs to find a way to protect her sister, but she’s never felt more alone.

Binny’s siblings start to show strange powers, in particular her younger sister Cassie. One of the neighbors seems particularly interested in her kid sister, and Binny doesn’t trust it at all. When they find out more about how they were born, and the neighbors’ strange connection to them, in addition to Cassie’s power to disappear, Zach and Binny realize something very, very strange is going on.

A quirky fantasy adventure with three siblings and one of their friends starring in the main roles. I liked it, and thought it could be used as a script for one of those Nicolodeon series on TV. There’s definitely certain depth to the characters, and each sibling has a distinct personality.

A solid read, excellent writing, and a good story.

Book Review A Life Less Ordinary

Updated cover patricia feb 28 13Title: A Life Less Ordinary

Author: Victoria Bernadine

Genre: Chicklit, Contemporary Fiction

For the last fifteen years, Rose “Manny” Mankowski has been a very good girl. She turned her back on her youthful fancies and focused on her career. But now, at the age of 45, she’s questioning her choices and feeling more and more disconnected from her own life. When she’s passed over for promotion and her much younger new boss implies Manny’s life will never change, something snaps. In the blink of an eye, she’s quit her job, sold her house and cashed in her pension, and she’s leaving town on a six month road trip.

After placing a personal ad for a travelling companion, she’s joined in her mid-life crisis by Zeke Powell, the cynical, satirical, most-read – and most controversial – blogger for the e-magazine, What Women Want. Zeke’s true goal is to expose Manny’s journey as a pitiful and desperate attempt to reclaim her lost youth – and increase his readership at the same time. Leaving it all behind for six months is just an added bonus.

Now, armed with a bagful of destinations, a fistful of maps, and an out-spoken imaginary friend named Harvey, Manny’s on a quest to rediscover herself – and taking Zeke along for the ride.

A surprisingly feel good book about giving yourself a new chance to reinvent yourself, to become the person you’ve always wanted to be. Rose “Manny” Mankowski has led a pretty boring life uptil the start of this book. She’s lived for her career, and when the promotion she’s dreamed of, is given to another girl, her world collapses. But it’s unlike Manny to do something about it. Except…this time, it’s been too much. She quits her job, digs into her savings, and puts up an ad in a newspaper for a travelling companion. She’ll travel for six months, a road trip.

Coming along for the ride is Zeke, a satirical, cynalic blogger for an e-magazine. Zeke’s goal is to expose Manny’s journey as a desperate attempt to reclaim her lost youth. But things may not be so straightforward, nor so easy, once he really gets to know her.

This book was at times hilarious, sometimes a bit saddening, especially at the start. I really felt for Manny, but she was so courageous to try and reinvent herself, to become a better person, and to lead a better life.

Book Excerpt from The Continuing Journeys of a Different Necromancer

I’m hosting an excerpt today from fantasy novel “The Continuing Journeys of a Different Necromancer”. Wow, that’s a mouthful! Hope you enjoy the excerpt.

Book Excerpt

A dozen tiny hands grabbed her by the hair and jerked her off the seat and across the giving sand. He dove for her feet, but only his fingertips touched her. Scrambling to his feet he chased her into the dark, but his name, coming to him in screams, faded quickly into the distance. He fell to all fours crying out her name in breathless sobs.

* * * *

The sun shone bright in the clear, blue, noonday sky. The surf broke on the yellow-brown sand of the beach. He felt as if he had just awakened from a long, deep sleep. Only a dream, only a dream.’He sat up and wrapped his knees to his chest with his arms.

A low moan came from behind him and made him turn.

There, held with arms outstretched by tiny, grey-skinned hands against the rocks of the cliffside, was Christina. Jagged metal fishing barbs protruded from every inch of her naked body, with strings dangling from them. A small pudgy grey-skinned thing sat on her head holding two strings attached to barbs pulling her eyelids open so he could see the pain-filled pleading.

Another little pudgy creature’s head emerged from the rocks beside her, and giggled a high-pitched laugh that reminded him of an insane child. With one of its small hands, it grabbed a string and pulled down.

His Chris opened her mouth to scream, but another of the hands formed into a fist and punched it down her throat. Tears rolled down her cheeks and sobs racked her body.

He tried to run to her, but couldn’t move. Looking down, he saw the same hands latched onto his clothes, he felt them stretching his mouth and pulling his hair. With that same insane giggling, they pulled him back and out over the water. Further and further out, until the land became a haze on the edge of his vision. Shadows swam below him, just under the surface, waiting for the hands to drop him into their deep terrifying home. One of them looked around to put its white-eyed face in his. With its razor sharp teeth, it bit savagely into his nose. He screamed and they let him fall. For an impossibly long time the water grew closer. He screamed more as the shadows below gathered for his plunge into what he somehow knew to be an icy death.

Book Excerpt The Howling Heart

I’m happy to share an excerpt from “The Howling Heart”, a paranormal romance novel for adults. Enjoy the excerpt!

Book Excerpt

I stole a glance at him while he looked at the river. He leaned back casually on his elbows, and I couldn’t help but admire his six-pack abs and toned chest. Little, brown moles spotted his torso, and I imagined playing connect-the-dots with my tongue. His skin enticed me, and I wanted to run my hands all over it. A lustful feeling washed over me, and I swallowed thickly, averting my gaze.

Riley chuckled low in his throat, and I knew he caught me staring. His hand touched my lower back, and I looked at him over my shoulder. A grin spread across his lips as he tugged the shirt hem.

“This is my shirt, isn’t it?” My eyes widened, and I whipped my head around. In less than two seconds, my face flushed with heat.

“Um, yes,” I mumbled. “Sorry. I borrowed it, because Quinn’s clothes were too small for me, and I didn’t feel comfortable browsing through Celia’s wardrobe.” The latter reason was a lie. I was just determined to cover myself with his clothes.

“No worries. I don’t mind,” he soothed. “You can borrow whatever you want. What’s mine is yours, love.”

Book Excerpt Inside the Tall, Thick Book of Tales

I’m hosting an excerpt today from fantasy novel “Inside the Tall, Thick Book of Tales”. Enjoy the excerpt!

Book Excerpt

Jacob lands with a loud splash in the deep muck of a large pond in front of a larger grassy knoll. He bubbles an “ooof” under the surface, then stands, spitting water and mud.

Partway up the knoll is a cave. The pond is shallow enough to stand in but deep enough to completely immerse Jacob when he fell. He wades through the brown silt to the bank, sputtering and wiping his face and eyes. He sits on the knoll and takes off his left shoe, dumping out some of the sticky pond muck. He begins to remove the right as well, stops, looks up, and sighs. “Why am I doing this?” he asks himself. With a wave, he is in a set of freshly laundered and pressed clothes.

“Ah, my benefactor cometh.” A low voice echoes from the cave. It is followed by the rumbling, scraping sound of something being dragged along the cave walls.

Jacob turns around just as the head of a giant worm emerges from the cave entrance.

The worm squeezes about fifteen yards of itself out of the hole, filling much of the shore. The movement pushes the smell of dank earth before it. There is no way to tell how much more of it remains concealed. Its head is massive, at least five or six yards wide, all mouth and teeth. In place of eyes, two long, hairless, prehensile antennae wave about constantly as it speaks.

Jacob recovers quickly from the initial shock of seeing the creature. Coughing shallowly at the unfamiliar smell, he tilts his head, questioning. “Benefactor?”

The worm leans forward and touches an antenna lightly to several parts of Jacob’s face, then draws back. “Ah. I see I am mistaken. You are not him.”

Jacob rubs his face where he’s been touched. “You mean Palmer, then.”

“As you say.” A small bird flies from a tree toward the pool’s edge. It never makes it, though, as the worm quickly elongates itself and neatly plucks the bird out of the air with its mouth. Swallowing, it slowly recedes to its former length.

“Tasty,” it says, “but not as sweet as they claimed revenge would be.” Jacob raises an eyebrow and says nothing.

“Don’t worry,” the worm says, retracting. “It wasn’t real. With respect to birds, I just enjoy having the shoe on the other foot, though I don’t need the former, since I don’t have the latter.”

Jacob says nothing but studies the huge creature curiously.

“Might we be introduced?” the worm asks, picking a feather from between two teeth with its left antenna. “I do realize the absolute bore of formality, but when the introduction is to the first sentient creature one ever meets. . .”

Jacob clears his throat. “Um, certainly. My name is Jacob,” he says, standing and making a slight bow.

“Jacob.” The worm nods. “Fine.” He raises up a few feet. “You may call me The Worm. Or just Worm, as you like. Either will suffice.”

“As you wish,” Jacob says, nodding.

Worm curls its exposed part into an S shape. “Tell me: Do you like my little retirement community?” “Your. . .” Jacob looks around and back at the stream. He nods. “Yes. It’s a charming spot, er, Worm.”

About the Book

18762397Title: Inside the Tall, Thick Book of Tales

Author: A.C. Birdsong

Genre: Fantasy

On a small farm just outside of a tiny town lives Jacob, the last in a long line of Caretakers of Magic. His mission in life as the world’s only magician (in fact the only person who knows magic is possible) is to preserve magical skill in preparation for the day when magic is needed in the world. Other than what is required to train an apprentice, Caretakers aren’t to be practitioners, a tenet Jacob adheres to religiously.

Jacob has been teaching an apprentice, Palmer, for eight years. As a student, Palmer is a dismal failure, but this does not stop him from experimenting. Feeling that the pace of his instruction is unnecessarily slow, Palmer takes the little magic he knows, twists it, and uses it to trap Jacob and a young neighbor Lucy inside an old book of fairy tales (The Tall, Thick Book of Tales). Palmer refuses to release them unless Jacob imparts all magical knowledge to him in an instantaneous way.

From the moment of Jacob’s entrapment, Birdsong creates three interwoven storylines: Palmer’s dealings with the townspeople, who are searching for Lucy and quickly suspect Palmer for her disappearance; Jacob’s journey to escape, which takes him through scenes written into the book by Palmer, designed to harass Jacob and to speed his compliance along; and Lucy’s interaction with the book’s original characters, all magical themselves, trapped within the margins by Palmer’s spell, and are united in their desire to expel the intruders. Added to this mix are an enchanted bookworm and the fairy tales’ narrator, who have objectives of their own.

Readers will enjoy Inside the Tall, Thick Book of Tales. Birdsong skillfully mixes the real and the imaginary worlds with a lean and fast-paced style. A well-crafted and fun novel with colorful characters and great dialogue written for any fan of adult fiction, and suitable for young adults and older adolescents as well.

Author Bio

ACB-Author-Photo-2013-12-Book-TourA.C. Birdsong wrote the first draft of Inside the Tall, Thick Book of Tales during an unseasonably cold winter in Athens, Greece. “I spent all my time either writing the story or searching for a reasonably warm and cheap place to write it. Often this left me huddled near tepid steam heaters in dingy hotel rooms, and drinking endless cups of weak Nes to fight the cold. Eventually the weather turned, which was not only fortunate for me, but for Jacob and Palmer as well, because they probably would still be fighting it out inside that book otherwise.”

A.C. lives in Seattle, where people voluntarily allow themselves to be trapped in books on a regular basis. This is his first novel.

Book Excerpt from A Dance for Fools

Today I’m hosting a snippet from “A Dance for Fools”, an erotica novella by author J.A. Lynch. Have fun!

Book Excerpt

“Your ladyship, your bath is ready.” Klára, my chambermaid said as I sipped wine, staring out into the cool night.

Nodding at her, she bowed her head and stared to the floor, not once making eye contact with me. The girl feared me, feared being alone, possibly afraid of seduction, or death. Whichever it was, it couldn’t have been further from the truth. Yet, the rumours continued to spiral out of control, leaving many a man and woman avoiding being alone with me.

Of course, I relished the solitude. It gave me time to figure out exactly what I wanted to do. It also meant I didn’t have to always defend myself or my choices. But only for Batar, my days would have been extremely boring; he brought a little enlightenment to an already decaying existence.

Slipping out of my silken gown, I stood naked in full view of Klára who took one hand as I stepped into the bath and sank down under the water. The warm soapy foam felt luxurious against my skin. The fragrant scent of lavender and honeysuckle was delicious and helped relax my already anxious mind.

Sponging my skin, Klára cleansed my body as I wittingly gazed at the flickering light of the candles surrounding the huge marble tub.

“Why do you fear me?” I asked as my hands were washed.

My question was met with silence.

This pissed me off. I loathed when my servants disobeyed me, playing their little games of insolence.

“Speak when you are spoken to girl.” I demanded.

Her hands shook as she sponged the warm soap over my chest, and I could feel her odd heartbeat increase. She was panicking, yet trying her best to continue her job. I found that fascinating.

“Klára, I mean you no harm.” I softened my tone, which seemed to do the trick because she inhaled deeply before she spoke.

“They say you are a witch.” She muttered, her voice shaking.

Laughing hard, I made her jump, her hand dropping the sponge into the water and before she sank her hand down to retrieve it, she hesitated and met my eyes.

“If I were a witch, don’t you think I would have magicked myself clean?” I joked.

Shrugging her shoulders, she found the sponge, and squeezed it before applying more crème to lather into my skin.

“They say you killed the Rose for her powers.” She blurted out.
