Book Review Wolf Legend

wolflegendTitle: Wolf Legend

Author: Florence Witkop

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Jane, who dislikes wolves because they kill livestock, takes Buck Portman, wolf researcher and wildlife professor at the nearby college to an island for a week to seek out the huge wolves legend says have been seen in the area. She’s skeptical until a huge wolf runs through their camp… and mentally connects with Jane. Both woman and wolf are startled by their mental connection. The wolf invites Jane to follow so they can sort out what’s between them. Jane takes off after the wolf in the dark, followed by the confused professor. She follows the wolf through a cave and into another world, one populated by larger-than-life, dangerous animals, including the wolves of the legend. Her mental connection to the alpha she-wolf is all that saves their lives in that dangerous place. Days later, when they return to their world, at the request of the alpha wolf they take her wolf pup with a broken leg so it can be healed. Problem is that wild wolves are not allowed as pets in our world so the professor must technically care for the wolf with Jane’s help. But he has reservations. The huge dire wolf pup is in the wrong world. As it grows, will it remain a pet or become a dangerous predator? As the attraction between Jane and the professor grows, so do the problems inherent in having a huge prehistoric wolf in today’s world.

Jane doesn’t like wolves, mostly because they tend to kill livestock, but she does agree to take Buck Portman to an island for a week, to look for the huge wolves who’ve apparently been spotted there, if she’s to believe local folklore; Buck Portman is a wolf researcher and wildlife professor who spends most of his time…you guessed it, investigating wolves, and their behavior.

Jane isn’t convinced the huge wolves even exist, until one rummages their camp, and establishes a mental connection with Jane, which startles both her, and the wolf. Like that isn’t enough weird stuff for one day, Jane follows the wolf, through a cave and into another world. This world is populated by huge, dangerous animals, including the wolves the legend spoke off. The only thing that saves Jane and Buck from a certain death in this mysterious world, is her connection with the female alpha wolf. But when she has to do a favor in return for the wolf who saved her life, that favor might put all of them in danger. Bringing a pup who will grow up to be a gigantic dire wolf back to the human world – the wrong world, if you will – could be dangerous for all of them.

When I first read the title, I half-expected this would be another werewolf story. Boy, was I wrong! This story is about a thousand times more entertaining, and a hundred times more original. Jane is a great character, she’s skeptic, but not afraid to admit she’s wrong when evidence provides itself. Buck is such a sweet, compassionate guy, I had no choice but to love him.

The other world, with huge wolves and predators, was amazing, and reminded me of my childhood, when I pretended to end up in another world every time I walked through a cave, or anything of the sort.

Book Excerpt from Taking Chances

takingchancesbanner

I’m hosting an excerpt from paranormal erotic romance “Taking Chances” on my blog today. Enjoy the excerpt, and don’t forget about the giveaway! It’s at the bottom of this post.

Book Excerpt

“Let’s dance,” came a deep, masculine whisper, causing her to jump like a schoolgirl who’d just been touched by a to-die-for rock god. Elijah—he’d come out of nowhere to stand behind her, leaning down to whisper in her ear. Dakota recognized his voice from the tapes her client had played for her. He didn’t wait for an answer. The vamp exuded confidence as he walked onto the dance floor and turned to face her, beckoning.

In her nervousness, Dakota sloshed some of the nasty-looking black drink on her arm and promptly forgot many of the details of her plan. She’d never had the opportunity to see Elijah up close before, but she could see why women lined up to spread their legs for him.

He was stunningly handsome, and the sight of him, highlighted by the disco lights, nearly took her breath away.

The shape-shifter had a weakness for tall men. They brought a bit of vulnerability out in her, something she usually kept hidden behind an I-can-handle-anything façade. Elijah was well over six feet tall, with broad shoulders that definitely said he could handle it, a dark mop of wavy black hair that set off smoky brown eyes and eminently kissable lips. His expression was dark and brooding yet unabashedly sensual. He looked as if he had secrets only fit for whispering within a tight embrace.

Though Dakota didn’t often struggle for composure, she felt a thrill race up her spine and had to fight to remain calm as she set her drink on a nearby table. She couldn’t bring herself to walk as far as the bar, where a tangled knot of beings was engaged in activities sure to make even the most used hooker blush. The public sex wasn’t responsible for her out-of-control heart rate, though. Instead, it was Elijah’s request to dance that shot her heart rate through the roof. She should have guessed he’d want to dance. Why wouldn’t he?

Elijah’s godlike form, already undulating in wait for her, had all but obliterated most of her rational thought process. She walked, a bit unsteadily, to join him on the dance floor, and tried to pick up the rhythm he’d set. Her movements were stiff, awkward at first, and her heart raced faster in fear of discovery. Desiree would surely not look so out of place dancing with him. Fortunately, the witch’s glamour her client had procured seemed to hide her beating heart and mortal smell quite well. Up until this moment, she hadn’t felt completely confident of its abilities.

“Relax,” Elijah said, his voice deep and husky. He didn’t shout to be heard over the music, but Dakota had no trouble hearing him. It felt as if his voice vibrated within her body. He moved toward her, stopping mere centimeters away to run a finger over the side of her face and down her neck to her collarbone. “Don’t think. Just feel the music.”

Dakota fought to clear her head, which became even more difficult when he took hold of her hips and guided them in matching his movements. Her breath came quickly and she had trouble focusing on anything but him. She was hardly aware of the crowd surrounding them. From the moment he touched her, it was as if only the two of them occupied the dance floor.

The vampire danced so close she could feel the heat radiating off his body. He was dressed casually in jeans and a simple black button-down shirt that he hadn’t bothered to button. His gaze was so intense that, wanting to look anywhere but at him, she focused on the broad chest he’d left exposed. Big mistake. His abdominal muscles rippled and churned with each movement he made. That’s when she realized her problem. She was attracted to the vamp.
Having been burned far too many times, Dakota was usually slow to warm up to men, immortal or otherwise. Even when she met someone she actually liked and let her guard down, it often felt like she was watching herself date—even fuck, rather than fully letting go. The instant attraction she felt for Elijah was overwhelming. An animal heat, a vicious hunger, had washed over her the moment she’d laid eyes on him, and it was both overwhelming and confusing.
Dakota knew she should focus on the matter at hand, but her eyes had other plans—devouring him. He caught her gaze, and smiled at her knowingly. It was as if he could read her mind and knew that she’d just been wondering what he would taste like. She wanted to touch him. In fact, her hands practically burned with the need to feel him, and when the song changed and he drew her into his arms, she wrapped her arms around his neck as if they belonged there.
“Much better,” Elijah leaned down to whisper in her ear.

Author Bio

Suzette Rose Cauler has loved books (all types really) for as long as she can remember. As a child, she’d get lost in books for hours, using a flashlight to read under the covers long past bedtime. She read her first romance novel as a preteen and was immediately hooked by the swoon-worthy heroes and daring, spunky damsels. Though her reading tastes have definitely matured, Suzette continues to enjoy romance novels, especially those of the erotic, paranormal, fantasy, or historical variety. She writes almost as voraciously as she reads and typically falls head over heels in love with her heroes.

Though everyday types of romantic situations do appeal to her, stories that include adventure, intrigue, or danger have always made Suzette’s heart go pitter patter. If they incorporate some science fiction too, she is even happier. You’ll find elements like these in most of her stories as well as strong heroines who can fight their own battles but sometimes enjoy letting someone else take the lead.

Suzette lives on the East Coast with five special people who help keep her spirit young and her imagination fresh.

Book Excerpt

Connor was shocked when Raven took off. She skipped the overgrown trail and headed straight into the trees. He followed her, awed by her graceful movements. If he’d been human, he never would have been able to keep up with her. With each step she seemed to gain strength.

Connor finally caught her arm. “Slow down some, little nymph.”

“Why?” she asked with a radiant smile. “Are you having trouble keeping up with me?”
Connor stepped in closer to her body and leaned in until she was trapped against a tree by his much larger body. Her gasp made him smile. She had obviously noticed his erection pressed against her belly. “Vampires get excited by the chase,” he said. “It weakens my self control.”

Her eyes widened. “I thought you said you didn’t want an unwilling partner.”

“I don’t,” he said. “That’s why I would have to lay you down on the ground and lick every inch of your sweet body until you begged me to take you.”

Her pulse quickened and Connor couldn’t resist the temptation to lean forward and run his tongue across it. That made him even harder and he hadn’t thought that was possible. Damn, but she seemed to be considering letting him do it. The green tint to her cheeks seemed to deepen. Never in a million years would he have guessed that green tinted flesh would be a turn on. This hadn’t happened before, so he assumed it had something to do with her proximity to nature. He suddenly wondered if other parts of her body flushed green when she was excited. Damn, he really would love to strip her naked and find out.
Finally, she let out a shaky breath. “Sorry, I’ll move slower.”

He released her and adjusted his jeans. “We need to stop for a minute so I can get things under control,” he said.

“I’m sorry,” she said nervously. “I wasn’t trying to do that to you.”

“You never are,” he said mostly to himself.

Read an Excerpt

She fell asleep under the tree. Kevin didn’t let go of her hand. She woke up after a short while, looking into the green leaves above. She blinked her eyes as light beamed down from the sky, finding its way through the tree branches up above. She turned her head, her vision still blurry with sleep. She looked into Kevin’s eyes. They were light hazel, almost gold, and his dark eyelashes were longer than any she had ever seen. His fingers fluttered on her soft hand as he ran them over her skin and intermingled her hand with his until they felt like only one.

“Hi,” he said.

“Can I ask you something?” she questioned.

“Of course,” he replied.

“Why did you defend us that day in the cafeteria?”

“To be honest, I wasn’t defending you. I was defending Michael.”

“But why did you when no one else did?”

“I guess you and I—we’re a dime a dozen, but Michael . . . he’s like that yellow leaf in a mix of green—one of a kind. I wasn’t going to let someone make him feel bad for it.”

Ann Marie leaned herself forward until she could feel Kevin’s breath against hers. Pressing her lips to his, she felt what could only be described as a shimmer. It started at the cusp of her lip and flowed like water surrounding her heart. Kevin looked back into her eyes as they lay under the sky.

“You know,” Kevin said, “when I was a kid, I had a bad stutter. Kids used to pick on me every day at school. One day, I came home crying, and I never forgot what my mom said. She told me that God doesn’t make mistakes. She said I was perfect, that it was special, that I was different from everyone else—one of a kind. I never forgot it.”
