Guest Post I Am Ella. Buy Me.

iamellabanner

Guest post time! This post is written by Joan Ellis, author of chicklit / humor / romance “I Am Ella. Buy Me.” I’m glad to host this book on my blog, as it sounds like a great read!

New book. New genre.

Author, Joan Ellis explains how she went from snappy copywriter to cold-bloodied killer in the click of a key.

A chance meeting with a killer took me from chick lit to psychological thriller in a heartbeat.

I had spent a year writing I am Ella. Buy me, loving the genre, enjoying every funny, flippant phrase. Ella is Bridget Jones meets Peggy from Mad Men as she dodges her sleazy boss and tries to get a foothold in a man’s world in London’s mad, bad Adland in the 80s.

Yet, there I was starting my new novel with the line: I slit someone’s throat.

How could I go from the warm, witty world of Ella to the dark, dangerous place I now inhabited?

More importantly, why didn’t I move when I found myself next to a murderer on a train? I listened to him for over an hour. During that time I was repulsed, shocked and terrified but never bored. Any normal person would’ve changed seats. Not me. I listened to his sordid tales, what he did, how he did it, gaining an unrivalled glimpse into a criminal’s mind. As black as it seemed, this was a golden opportunity to learn about things I could never dream of. This was the stuff of nightmares. Desperate not to miss a word, I mentally noted down not only what he said but how he said it, his accent an essential part of his character.

As we neared his stop, he had the audacity to ask me to run away with him. Obviously, I declined but what if I had? What would it take to make a respectable middle-aged woman go with a man like him?

I couldn’t stop thinking about the rough and ready guy. Slowly the plot formed.

Two strangers. One shared interest. Murder. Ben Slit a man’s throat. Sandra’s son witnessed a stabbing. When Sandra discovers she has a stalker, she turns to the one person who is up to the job, Ben, with horrific consequences.

‘The Killing of Mummy’s Boy’ was born.

With the voice of the man on the train still in my head, my erstwhile travelling companion supplied all the ‘unexpected twists and turns’ one reviewer kindly credited me with.

To pen the book, I became Ben, a killer, and Sandra, a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. How different from witty yet vulnerable Ella.

Someone asked how I could write in two such different styles. As an advertising copywriter for over thirty years, I would work on up to half a dozen briefs at any one time. One minute I was penning ads for charities, the next for kettle descalers. Obviously, the tone of voice and brand identity was different for each product, calling for a range of writing styles.

My third novel Guilt, is a thriller too. Shame I’ve finished it, writing a tale about the impact of a toxic emotion on one girl’s life became my guilty pleasure.

About The Book

cover-4-1Title: I am Ella. Buy me.

Author: Joan Ellis

Genre: Humor / Chick lit / Romance

I AM ELLA. BUY ME

‘I am a ginger tom. I am a boy racer. I am a housewife. I am a pain in the arse.’

Ella David is Bridget Jones meets Peggy from Mad Men.

Working in Soho’s mad, bad Adland in the sexist 80s, Ella is a rare beast – a woman in a man’s world, dodging her sleazy boss, Peter.

Based on Joan’s experiences in Soho’s mad, bad Adland, this fast-paced, funny tale is set against a backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain when money trumps morals
and lust is a must. Thankfully, Ella knows love is more powerful but can two unlikely friendships help her go from a girl in the firing line to a woman calling the shots?

Prologue: The Opportune Battle

{March 12th, 36 AD}

“Ad augusta per angusta.”

“To high places by narrow roads.” –Latin expression

One/Unus

At the edge of the world’s greatest Empire, two armies gathered on a battlefield.

Tullus Acilius Ulixes, Prime officer of the First Cohort, and senior Centurion of the 3rd Legion, watched the opposing army of Parthians gathering in the distance. Here he was, surveying another battleground: this one a grassland, dotted with short clover patches stretched out over an expanse, soft earth under his feet. Men would die here today. “ I hear the Parthians are quite an effective fighting force,” Tullus said. His friend and Optio, Decimus Axius, was preparing to leave for the final inspection. Around them men were preparing the siege engines for battle.

“I hope this young Prince our leaders are backing is worth the blood and sweat of five thousand Roman soldiers,” Decimus said.

“Vitellius knows what he’s doing, Decimus. Besides, Emperor Tiberius wants the incumbent Artabanus II off the Parthian throne. He says this new figurehead Prince, Tridates, will bring stability along our eastern borders.”

“Sometimes you sound more like a bloody politician than a Roman officer, Tullus,” Decimus said. He trudged off to inspect the ranks.

Tullus grinned. He certainly didn’t feel like a politician: dressed in his steel helm with transverse red plume crest, ring mail shirt under a leather harness decorated with gold phalerae. Leather pteruges extended beneath his harness while a blue cloak and greaves completed his uniform. Tullus turned to admire the first line of his troops: dressed in their strip armor, iron helms and armed with shields and spears. Despite the tedious four day march from their base in Syria they were ready for battle–that’s what it meant to march under the Eagles of Rome.                            The pale blue heavens stretched out above him, filled with soft clouds outlining the yellow sun. His attention centered on a jagged cloud resembling a Griffin’s head as it announced its regal presence across the sky. He had seen a drawing of a Combat Griffin once, in a cave, when he was a boy, its image forever etched in his memory. The majestic creatures had disappeared years ago, while their legendary riders, the Air Paladins, had faded into history. Tullus sighed and turned his attention back to his surroundings. The sun beat down on him mercilessly, warm for March, and it would get warmer once the battle commenced–the close proximity of men killing one another did that.

“Something on your mind, Tullus?” Decimus was back from his inspection.

Tullus eyed the jagged cloud again. “What I wouldn’t do for an Air Legion of Combat Griffins above us.”

“And who would ride them my friend?”

“Well it wouldn’t be me, Decimus. You know I don’t like heights.”

Book Excerpt from Lucky

luckybanner

Book Excerpt

The sound of a transport rumbled in the distance. Seeing his opportunity, Thanatos reached for her hand and nudged it so the wheel moved to the left. Lost in her dreams of a beach vacation, she didn’t even shiver at the contact. Every human felt the brush of Death, except Caerus Thornton. She should be dead. His touch was Death. Her immunity to his touch caused him the most distress, because no matter how exceptional, a human couldn’t survive his touch—not without divine intervention.

Thanatos pushed with more force than was necessary. No matter what got in his way the woman would die. She and her tiny silver sports car wouldn’t survive a collision with the massive vehicle approaching. The car moved into the oncoming traffic lane as Caerus focused on finding another station on the radio, oblivious to the horror looming ahead.

His breath caught. Would he finally rid himself of his epic nightmare? The stain that left an eternal black mark on an otherwise spotless record would finally vanish in a mess of twisted metal and gore. The very idea sent an almost orgasmic chill through his body.

The elation vanished as something else, something strangely familiar, crept into the small car with them.

Failure.

Thanatos gritted his teeth. As the truck came into view, he willed the car to keep its course. The Mercedes shook as it ran over a bump in the road and the cell phone flew off the console to clatter on the floor near her feet.

It must happen.

Somewhere along the way Thanatos finds himself falling for the woman he’s spent more than two decades trying to kill.
