Ragweed Goes to Mexico

Ragweed sat on the ground and let the Sycamore’s falling leaves shower her with golden yellow, orange and red. Fall was her favorite time of year: Pumpkin patches, apple trees and the crisp air proclaiming Halloween was not far away.

“Get packed. We are going to Mexico.” Ragweed was still daydreaming when her mother shouted this message from the back door several feet away.

“Mexico?” thought Ragweed, “Why Mexico?”

“We are going to Mexico to make a travel fishing show. And Pops is going to be the producer,” Moms announced as Ragweed walked through the door.

Ragweed couldn’t ever remember the family going fishing. She wasn’t even sure if her extravagantly wealthy Pops would dare touch a worm. Didn’t you have to stick your hand underneath dirt, germs and other ungodly things like GRIME? Pops country club status would come to a halt if word got out, Ragweed was sure of that.

Moms must have ESP. She is conversing with Ragweed who hasn’t yet said a word out loud.

“We are going to La Paz, and rent a fishing boat, and travel by regular plane – like regular people.”

“We are not regular people,” Ragweed mused to herself. “In fact, I have no idea what kind of people we really are, but certainly not regular.”

“And Pops is going to film it all,” continued Moms. “And we will have the Rolls Royce shipped to La Paz by boat.”

Ragweed was really concerned at this point. The Rolls wasn’t exactly what she thought a fishing car would look like. And who would want to watch a weird family driving around La Paz in a Rolls Royce after a day of fishing?

Pops was an idea man and when his “light bulb” went off there was no stopping him.

Once Pops had developed a sure fire way to keep dogs in the back seat of a car. Pops called it his “Doggie Stay Put” device. It was a hand with a finger pointing to the back seat, and every time it went up and down it would say “Stay.” The most notice ever paid to the darn thing was when Pop’s Irish Wolfhound, Herman, landed in the back seat of the Rolls, and promptly ate the hand – ending THAT project.

And then there was the “pre-knotted” string tie. There was a slight flaw: Once you snapped them on, they wouldn’t come off. Needless to say, there were a lot of unhappy customers.

Yet, one day the family was rich.
