I’m hosting an excerpt from supernatural novel “Brothers in Arms” today. I hope you enjoy the excerpt – I thought it was fun. Have fun reading!

Book Excerpt

“I’m… not sure what you mean, exactly.”

“What I mean is, unlike almost everyone in this line of work, I understand that you have been driven by necessity, not ambition. As I understand it, that necessity is starting to wane.”

I nod. I guess he must have heard about Luke registering the house as an official charity. They get a lot more money that way, and access to better care and education than I was able to give them. Still, I don’t see what this has to do with anything.

“Sort of… I mean, sure, the kids are taken care of financially, but I still have to make sure they’re left alone.”

“Oh? Has anyone been after them in the past two years? I was not aware of that.”

I do that stupid fish face thing where I open my mouth and close it again. He’s right, of course. In the year after I took over the Borodinski group, a lot of people were after them, and what used to be the brothel, but not so much anymore. At first it was because of me and what I could do, and after that, my status and reputation really helped. Now, though… the place is pretty much… off the radar. I’d been so busy with everything I didn’t even really think about it.

“…no. I guess not.”

He nods once, and smiles at me, looking like he expects me to say something more. I clear my throat again. He’s right, but I’m not sure what he wants me to say.

“There’s still Lori, and Nicolas. I mean, I have to make money.”

“And you cannot do that doing something else?”

I frown, trying not to show how nervous I’m getting. What is he driving at?

“Are you saying you don’t want me to work for you anymore?”

He chuckles softly, shaking his head, and reaches over to give me a soft pat on the cheek.

“I enjoy your company more than anyone else’s. I think of you as my own son.”

He sighs, and takes another sip of his port.

“But I am not sure you have the taste for what needs to be done in this line of work.”

I put down my coffee. I feel sick. Is he saying I don’t have what it takes? That I’m not good enough? It’s true that my numbers aren’t as high as when the Russians ran the show. All right, they’re nowhere close. I should have listened to Jimmy.
