Author: Intisar Khanani

Genre: YA Fantasy

The winding streets and narrow alleys of Karolene hide many secrets, and Hitomi is one of them. Orphaned at a young age, Hitomi has learned to hide her magical aptitude and who her parents really were. Most of all, she must conceal her role in the Shadow League, an underground movement working to undermine the powerful and corrupt Arch Mage Wilhelm Blackflame.

When the League gets word that Blackflame intends to detain—and execute—a leading political family, Hitomi volunteers to help the family escape. But there are more secrets at play than Hitomi’s, and much worse fates than execution. When Hitomi finds herself captured along with her charges, it will take everything she can summon to escape with her life.

I’m not always a fan of novella. Sometimes they lack depth or background, or character development. Not so in Sunbolt though. The book starts out strong, following our heroine Hitomi through the streets and alleys of Karolene. The reader is thrown into the action right away. Hitomi isn’t an ordinary girl – she works for a secret underground movement called “The Shadow League”, and their main goal is to stop the corrupt Arch Mage Wilhelm Blackflame from doing his evil bidding, like in this case, executing a leading political family. While Hitomi tries to protect the family, she herself becomes Blackflames’ next target.

I loved reading about the city of Karolene, with its narrow alleys, winding streets and peculiar inhabitants. The way the author described the city, it really came to life. And then there’s Hitomi, a vibrant, kick-ass character who keeps her cool in all situations, has a quick wit and intelligence, and plenty of courage to spare. She made this book interesting, drew me in from the first pages, the kind of heroine I can truly like and root for. She reminded me of an epic fantasy version of Buffy – strong and powerful, but with sharp humor.

The plot may not sound so original, but it really was. There were so many plot twists I didn’t see coming! And that for a novella. This first installment really sets the tone for the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to read more!
